With water making up as much as 25 percent of utility expenditures in multifamily housing, lowering water expenditures can significantly increase the affordability of and improve cash flows in multifamily housing. And water conservation is an increasing imperative in the face of climate change. A recent GAO report said that 40 out of 50 states are expecting water shortages of some kind in the next 10 years. With the severe drought and accompanying water restrictions in California, and as other states and localities respond to water shortages, this is a good time to focus on ways use water more efficiently, through better management practices, use of water efficient technologies, and greater resident awareness.
