Senior Day at the State Capitol

Monday

February 28th

OKLAHOMA CAPITOL – Oklahoma’s seniors and senior advocates will meet at the state Capitol Monday, Feb. 28, to discuss the needs of the growing number of older adults.

The program begins at 9:30 a.m. in the House Chamber and will conclude at 11:30 a.m. Scheduled speakers include Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb; Rep. David Dank; Rev. George E. Young Sr., a member of the Oklahoma Commission for Human Services and pastor at Holy Temple Baptist Church in Oklahoma City; and Lance Robertson, director of the OKDHS Aging Services Division.

Participants in Senior Day are encouraged to visit their legislators while at the Capitol.

Estimates for 2010 show nearly 700,000 Oklahoman s are age 60 and older. A recent Census calculation shows one in six Americans 65 years or older live in poverty. “Given these demographics and the current economic environment, it is critical that legislators understand the importance of programs for Oklahoma’s seniors,” said Lance Robertson, Director of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) Aging Services Division.

Exhibits will be on display on the second floor of the Capitol rotunda immediately following the program. For more information, contact the OKDHS Aging Services Division at (405) 521-2281.
