The National League of Cities (NLC) recently created a set of recommended strategies to embed racial equity in housing for cities across the country. These strategies include institutionalizing racial equity into all housing and community development plans; implementing inclusionary housing policies; and developing, supporting, and funding comprehensive eviction diversion programs that can assist both renters and landlords.
NLC points out that “as national protests and uprisings continue over the racial injustice in law enforcement that has long plagued our country, there is an opportunity for local leaders to boldly tackle systemic racism in their housing systems and repair the harms that have resulted in racial segregation, displacement, and inequitable communities.”
NLC also emphasizes the need for sufficient federal assistance that could aid cities with navigating Covid-19 recovery efforts, addressing housing shortages and affordability challenges, and mitigating budget cuts resulting from revenue shortfalls.
