Did you know the EITC lifts more working families out of poverty than any other government program? The Census Bureau showed in 2003 that the EITC lifted 4.4 million people out of poverty, including 2.4 million children. Estimates from 2004 suggest that the EITC provided approximately $39 billion worth of assistance to more than 21 million low-income working families. As the 2008 tax filing deadline is fast approaching and millions of families are struggling in the economic recession, this report, from the Children’s Defense Fund, found that low-income families lose billions of dollars each year to predatory commercial tax preparers and highlights the importance of tax credits for working families. In tax year 2006, low-income families lost $3.1 billion of their Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) benefits to high-interest, short-term loans, tax preparation fees, and other financial products issued by commercial tax preparers.

EITC Platform, March 2009. The tool was developed by the Aspen Institute, in partnership with the National Community Tax Coalition and with support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, and provides group discounts, products, and resources for programs that do EITC outreach, free tax preparation and asset-building. It includes an online "Quality Reviewer" training course that meets IRS requirements, which is free and self-directed.
